R15 Chief Blanket
Second Phase Chief Blanket by Navajo weaver Bessie Blie from Pinon, Arizona on the Navajo Reservation. The blanket is 53” x 75”. Note the green tree patterns within the red and black stripes.
Traditionally, the transition to Second phase blankets was noted by the addition of a red yarn which was procured by un-raveling an imported cloth known as bayeta. Second phase blankets also incorporated small blocks of thinner stripes within the larger stripes.
