Description

PS456 Mexican Ceremonial Figures

Mexican Ceremonial Figures by southwest artist Louis de Mayo.  The 14” x 14” acrylic painting has two Day of the Dead figures.  Gold leaf and silver leaf highlight the predominately black, gray and white painting.

Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world. The holiday is for family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family who have died.

Arizona artist Louis de Mayo (born 1926) is a contemporary painter of the American Indian who uses very little detail to let the viewer’s imagination run.  “The features in my figures are usually obscured and lack individual identity. They become generic, lost and out of place in contemporary landscapes. In contrast to the current mode of dress, they seem baroque.”
