Broad Faced Kachina by Hopi carver Leander Tenakhongva. This 14” kachina (including the base) was carved from cottonwood root in the traditional Hopi manner.
The Broad Face Kachina is a guard Kachina. When they appear during processions or ceremonies they function as warriors. They surround and protect the more sacred Kachinas. They are sometimes called the Angry Kachina or Watching Kachina because of their roles.
Leander’s dolls have a style of their own. His kachinas have become a favorite of collectors. His work is signed by his Hopi name, "Qoyungnuptu.”
