J438 Malachite Fetish Necklace

Vintage malachite fetish necklace by Zuni carver Lavina Tsikewa. The 34” necklace has 16 hand carved malachite fetish birds and animals. The beads are amethyst, coral, turquoise and malachite.  The necklace closes with silver cones and a hook and eye.

Zuni artist Lavina Tsikewa (1938- ) comes from a fetish carving family. She is the daughter of Mary and famous carver David Tsikewa.  She is the sister of Edna Leki and granddaughter of Teddy Weahkee.  She is married to Leonard (1938- ), who the family taught the art of fetish carving. Lavina and Leonard made channel inlay jewelry in the early 1960’s, and started carving fetishes in the early 1970’s.
