Description

Fertility doll carved by the Namji from Cameroon, Africa.  The Namji tribe is famous for their wooden dolls with geometric features and adorned with beads, cowrie shells, coins, fiber and leather strips. The dolls are given to young Namji girls to play with to ensure their fertility.  The doll is given a name, strapped to the girl’s back and carried everywhere she would go.  It is treated as the girl’s first child and was her responsibility.  It was to prepare her for her role as a mother.

This doll with red beads and cowrie shells is 11.5” tall.
