Retta Lou Adams

Hopi Basket Weaver

Retta Lou Adams, born June 6, 1040, is from the Bearstep/Spider Clan. She is from a family of basket weavers: m granddaughter of Josie Tyma; daughter of Gladys Kagenweama; sister of Regina Kagenveama; mother of Alicia Adams.

She learned the art of basket weaving at the age of 15 from her mother, Gladys Kagenweama, and she passed the art on to her daughter, Alicia Adams.

Retta states, “I have been making baskets for about 40 years. I am known for making large baskets with full figure kachinas. I have won first prize and blue ribbons at the Gallup Ceremonials and other Indian Markets in the past for my large coil plaques. I hope this will make my work as competitive and reasonable in price to galleries and other retail stores.”
