Black Face Yei by Navajo carver Milton Jordan. This one of a kind hand carved Yei is 7 ½” tall and on a 1” base.
This is not a Kachina, but a Navajo carving.
The Black Yei is the Fire Deity and the creator of the constellations. The Yei are the Navajo Holy People. A Yei Communicates between the Navajo People and their Gods. The “Holy People” represented in Navajo art are believed to restore health when called upon in a traditional Navajo ceremony.
Milton Jordan, full Navajo, is from Lukachukai on the Navajo Reservation. He has a degree in Art Education from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. His work is represented in many collections throughout the United States.
